Sustainability is at the core of our values.
In March 2019, the historic Fox landfill on the West Coast of New Zealand was ripped open by floodwaters washing thousands of kilograms of rubbish out to sea and left waste strewn over 100km of previously pristine West Coast beaches.
This natural disaster highlighted the problem of plastic waste generated by the Tourism Industry. A lot of the rubbish collected was plastic bottles from hotels and accommodation providers in the region. The West Coast of the South Island is a very popular tourist destination due to the spectacular natural beauty of the ancient glaciers, native forests and wild rivers and coastline.
“As a keen traveler and outdoor enthusiast, I was appalled by the waste that this natural disaster uncovered, that I felt compelled to come up with a better solution. And so, after much trial and error, the concept for Spire NZ was created” - Melissa Parker Bentley - Founder
