Minimum Order Quantity 4 bottles

Handblown glass carafe and tumbler to add a touch of luxury to the guest experience.

A super stylish way to provide drinking water for your guests, the elegant carafe is complimented by a glass stopper which conveniently doubles as a drinking glass and the binchotan charcoal removes any unpleasant taste from tap water making it ideal for everyone to use.

A sustainably sourced cork coaster finishes the look whilst having the practical benefit of preventing water marks on furniture.

Simply fill the carafe with safe tap water and add the charcoal stick.  Wait for the charcoal to filter impurities from the water, the longer the charcoal is left to work the better the water tastes, so prepare in advance of your arrivals in order to provide the best taste.

  • Elegant and stylish addition to the guest bedroom
  • Handbown glass with natural cork coaster
  • Inclues one binchotan charcoal filter (6 months life)
  • Glass carafe is dishwasher safe
  • Taste improves in as litter as an hour, but for best results leave for 4 -8 hours

Help your guests to get the most out of the charcoal filter by providing information on how to use the carafe so that they get the best results.

*Always fill the bottle with water before adding the charcoal to avoid breakages

User Guidance
  • Binchotan charcoal can be used every day for 3 months if you fill the carafe once a day. Then, simply boil for 10 minutes and ideally dry in the sun. This will reactivate the charcoal and allow you to use it for another 3 months.
  • Please do NOT wash the charcoal, it’s fine to use as it comes in the packaging.
  • Avoid adding flavourings to water (like fruit or tea) if you want to filter it with charcoal.
  • Remove charcoal before washing the bottle if using soap
  • Make sure you do not leave water sitting on the coaster and allow it dry out. When water is left on the coaster for long periods of time, mould spores can form.
Ingredients

What is the story behind Binchotan charcoal? Thanks to a man named Bichuya Chozaemon, Binchotan charcoal became popular in about the 17th century, however it’s history goes much further back than that. Sometimes referred to as ‘white charcoal’, this incredible natural material was thought to have been introduced to Japan by a Japanese monk, and a scholar, about 1,200 years ago. How do you make it? The process for creating Binchotan charcoal is very interesting. First, wood is placed in a low temperature kiln for a long time, and just before the end, the temperature is raised to 1000°C until the wood is glowing red-hot. It’s removed from the kiln and rapidly covered with a combination powder of sand, earth and ash. This will very quickly cool the wood and give it a whitish hue. The wood becomes very hard, with a shiny surface, which, if you tap, will sound clear and metallic. How does it filter water? Binchotan charcoal is also known as an ‘active carbon’ – meaning it attracts the ions of contaminants like chlorine to its surface, and holds them there. It’s incredibly porous surface area is able to pull these contaminants away from the water you drink, and can even release minerals like calcium and iron to improve taste and health benefits.

Environmental Impact

Materials are chosen with great care and consideration in relation to how they are required to function and also their environmental impact.

BAMBOO

This sustainable crop is a fast-growing grass, which requires no fertiliser and self-regenerates from its own roots (so it doesn’t need to be replanted) and regrows to its adult size in 3 to 5 years. It has a dense and consistent grain, which allows it to be accurately cut it to size and is also naturally anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. These attributes make it a perfect material for us to use as a lid/chopping board on some of the lunch boxes. We apply a natural mineral oil finish to seal it and if used and cared for properly, it will last a lifetime.

CARDBOARD PACKAGING

All product boxes are made from unbleached and uncoated cardboard. This makes them better for recycling (or even adding to your home compost to avoid filling your bin). When someone buys an individual product from our website, our warehouses will sometimes use recycled boxes or recycled filling material, to send these out rather than new outer boxes or new filling material. While this  might not look as pristine (or the box might sometimes be a bit larger than the item inside), we believe it is the right thing to do.

CHARCOAL

Active charcoal is used as a natural water filter to remove contaminants and add good minerals to tap water. The skilled artisan makers follow a traditional Japanese technique to make the charcoal. They only prune and coppice the branches of their fast growing native trees and do not remove the roots. This means the trees can grow back, and be harvested again, in five year rotations. They source the wood local to their kilns and this ensures the forests where the wood grows is protected.

CORK

We love using cork as a lid material on our vacuum insulated food thermoses lids of some of water bottles. It is renewable, biodegradable and 100% natural. It is obtained through an environmentally friendly harvesting process that ensures the tree’s continued life. It is also an excellent insulator which helps ensure that the contents of the vacuum jars stay hot (or cold) for hours on end.

GLASS

We use Borosilicate Glass in some of our bottles and lunch boxes. It is lightweight, strong and can withstand extreme temperatures (so safe for use in ovens, microwaves, freezers or dishwashers). It is also thermal shock resistant, so is more resistant to shattering when exposed to sudden temperature change. It is chemical resistant, taste neutral and free from lead and BPA free. It will age extremely well, will last a lifetime and is also 100% recyclable.

PLASTIC

We use the word ‘plastic’ to describe the different types of polymers that we use in our designs. These include polypropylene, Tritan, and POM. Every time we use a plastic, we use it sparingly and responsibly. Sometimes, a specific plastic is the best material for the job required. We understand and agree with the backlash against plastic pollution, but this does not mean plastic should not be used at all. We make sure the plastics we do use are BPA, BPS and phthalate free, are fully recyclable and most importantly are designed to last. It might sound wrong, but we want our designs to last as long as possible, but when they do come to the end of their life, they can still be recycled.

SILICONE

We use high quality food safe silicone for our seals and some lunchbox lids designs in order to make them leak-proof. It is an extremely tough material that can withstand temperatures from as low as -60°C to over 150°C, so is safe for use in freezers, ovens, microwaves or dishwashers. It is considered an inert material so it won’t leach dangerous chemicals such as BPA, BPS, lead, latex, and phthalates into your food or drink. Although it is not biodegradable, this can be seen as a benefit as it does not break down into micro particles that can then enter the environment/food chain. It is fully recyclable but check first with your local recycling centre.

STAINLESS STEEL

We use high quality 304 – 18/8 stainless steel for its long-lasting durability and excellent resistance to corrosion and rust. It is also 100% recyclable. Most importantly it is a material that can last a lifetime and even improve with age and use. It may take on the odd scratch, dent, or patina, but this will only add to its character and charm. Every mark will tell a story and make the product unique to you.

WOOD COMPOSITE

We mix recycled and sustainably sourced (FSC and PEFC) wood with either polypropylene or TPR. This material can be recycled into itself but most importantly gives a highly durable finish that will age well. It increases the amount of bio based content in the polymer and also increases its perceived value as it will age better and not show scratches, stains or wear the same way that standard single colour pristine plastic does.

City Harvest black blum

City Harvest puts surplus food to good use in a sustainable way. In a city as affluent as London, it is shocking to find that thousands of people go hungry each day. At the same time, it is such a waste that safe, healthy and usable food is being disposed of. City Harvest collects this nutritious surplus food from all segments of the food industry (including restaurants, grocers, manufacturers, wholesalers, hotels and caterers) and distributes it to the needy (including homeless shelters, soup kitchens, children’s programs, centers for the elderly, and refuges for women experiencing domestic violence). They divert food from landfill where it would release greenhouse gases that lead to climate change. To date, they have redistributed food valued at more than £20 million, free, to their partners and offset over 27,000 tons of greenhouse gases.

Find out more about City Harvest here and why food waste has such a large environmental impact and how you can do more to combat it, here.

Trees for Cities black blum

Trees for Cities are the only UK charity working on a national and international scale to improve lives by planting trees in cities. They get stuck in with local communities to cultivate lasting change in neighbourhoods – whether it’s revitalising forgotten spaces, creating healthier environments or getting people excited about growing, foraging and eating healthy food. To date, they have planted more than 1,117,899 trees with over 6000 volunteers, and educated over 16,000 school children in 26 cities.

We understand that by nature, creating more products does increase our environmental footprint. Which is why we ensure all our products are made to the highest quality with the best materials, designed to be used over and over again. Buy once, buy well.

Packaging Disposal Recyclable

The packaging for the charcoal itself consists of a really thin sheet of aluminium foil and some clear plastic. The two parts can be separated and recycled accordingly. To do this, put your thumbs inside the packaging and gently pull it apart. You will see the plastic and the foil separate in the corner. Gently start pulling the plastic away from the foil. Please go slow as the foil can break quite easily. You should end up with the two parts entirely apart.

All product boxes are made from unbleached and uncoated cardboard. Making them better for recycling (or even adding to your home compost to avoid filling your bin). But because of this, products come individually polybagged, this is to stop the giftbox artwork from smudging in transit. These poly bags are PE-LD 04 and are widely recyclable.

Product Disposal Recyclable, Reusable for other applications

There are many uses for Binchotan charcoal after you’ve finished with it as a water filter. If you add it to your wardrobe, it will absorb some of the moisture from the air. Similarly it can absorb bad odours due to its porous surface, making it perfect for shoes, cat litter trays and laundry baskets. It’s also very nutrient rich, so you can break it up and add it to the soil of your houseplants.
